The Santa Fe Art Institute (SFAI) is pleased to announce a 2 month residency for local designers, (including architects and landscape architects, graphic and web designers, urban designers, and emerging professionals), to focus on how design contributes to meaningful discourse around our current theme of Immigration/ Emigration.

We are specifically inviting design oriented practitioners to consider these questions: How do journeys of migrants contribute to our identity, our place, and place-making? What alternative models, projects and interventions can be explored that relate to the complex terrain of immigration and emigration? How can architects and designers contribute to participatory discourse that examines complexities and inequities in current and historic immigration systems in the United States?

Through April and May of 2016, this unique residency includes a dedicated group studio space; working and networking with our cohort of local, national, and international artists, activists and designers; promotion of your work; and participation in our monthly residency programming. There will be a flexible collaborative studio set aside for 24 hour access for selected residents. We will encourage the design residency cohort to engage in the space and SFAI’s programming, and to propose ways to engage the local community through workshops, roundtables, lectures, or other events. SFAI will host a culminating cohort-led event at the end of May, and will invite at least one design resident to present at the July SFAI140.

RESIDENCY DATES: March 30 – May 30, 2016. The SFAI Design + Immigration Residency is non- residential, and there are no fees involved.

Required application materials include the following: 3 work samples, a short paragraph describing your proposal and your ideas around design and immigration, and a bio and website link (if you have one).

To apply for the Spring 2016 SFAI Design + Immigration Residency, submit your application to Nina Elder, Residency Program Manager, at nelder@sfai.org.

The competitive selection process for residencies at SFAI is primarily based on the applicant’s ability to creatively and critically engage with the theme of Immigration/ Emigration. The selection focuses on the professional experience or aspirations of the designer, the quality of their past work, and their potential to sustain productive residency at SFAI.
